Vom 16. Juni bis 4. Juli 2025 nahmen 13 Studierende aus aller Welt an der International Summer School (ISS) zum Thema „How To Start Your Career in Germany“ teil. Die meisten der Teilnehmenden kamen von Partnerhochschulen der htw saar, darunter die Universidad Autónoma Yucatán (UADY), das Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexiko und die Southern Oregon University aus den USA; andere Studierende kam als Freemover aus Finnland und Ägypten. Ihr Ziel war es, die akademischen, beruflichen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Möglichkeiten der htw saar, des Saarlandes und Deutschlands im Allgemeinen kennenzulernen.

Das Eintauchen in die deutsche Sprache fand fast täglich durch Kurse von Tina Flauder statt, die in eine Gruppe für Anfänger*innen und eine Gruppe für Fortgeschrittene unterteilt waren. Diese Kurse boten dynamische, interaktive Aktivitäten, die es den Studierenden ermöglichten, die Sprache zu erlernen. Wie später noch zu sehen sein wird, hatten die Studierenden die Möglichkeit, das Gelernte während ihres Aufenthalts im Alltag anzuwenden und bei gemeinsamen Ausflügen den Sprachgebrauch in realen Situationen zu üben.

Die zweite Kategorie von Lehrveranstaltungen umfasste Seminare zu Leben, Wirtschaft, Unternehmen und Gesellschaft in Deutschland sowie zu Aspekten von Teamarbeit, Unternehmertum, Marketing und Projektmanagement und Bewerbungen, Gründen und Jobsuche in Deutschland. Diese Kurse wurden von Fachexpert*innen der htw saar gehalten: Vielen Dank an Prof. Malte Beinhauer, Prof. Petra Garnjost, Prof. Kerstin Heuwinkel, Prof. Frank Hälsig, Prof. Stefanie Jensen, Dr. Julia Frisch, Annika Ecker, Stefanie Valcic-Manstein, Melina Wittki und Anna Wetzling für Ihre Zeit und Ihr Engagement!

Außerdem stand wöchentlich ein Besuch bei einem der Top-Unternehmen der Region auf dem Programm. In der ersten Woche besuchte die Gruppe das Walzwerk von Saarstahl in Saarbrücken-Burbach.

Sie beobachteten dort den gesamten Herstellungsprozess von Stahldrähten, von der Materialbeschaffung bis zum Transport zu den Kunden. Die Teilnehmenden mussten Sicherheitsanzüge, Helme und Schutzbrillen tragen, welche das Unternehmen zur Verfügung stellte. In der zweiten Woche besuchte die Gruppe das Keramikunternehmen Villeroy & Boch. Dort beobachteten sie die Herstellung von Badezimmerarmaturen wie Waschbecken und Toiletten. Im firmeneigenen Museum erfuhren sie außerdem mehr über die Geschichte dieses Unternehmens und gerüchteweise wurde auch das Outletcenter freudig besucht. In der letzten Woche besuchten die Studierenden Hager in Blieskastel-Mimbach, wo sie exemplarisch die Herstellung von Sicherungskästen gezeigt bekamen und mehr über Hagers Produktpalette für Elektroinstallationen und Smartmanagement in Wohn-, Gewerbe- und Industriegebäuden erfuhren.

Zu guter Letzt genossen die Studierenden unterhaltsame Veranstaltungen des International Office wie Kneipen-, Stadt- und Musikfestivalbesuche, durch die sie von Linus Wrona geleitet wurden. So konnten sie ikonische Orte Saarbrückens wie das Schloss, den St. Johanner Markt und die Ludwigskirche besichtigen. Auch das Weltkulturerbe Völklinger Hütte durfte natürlich nicht ausgelassen werden.

Die Teilnehmenden nahmen auch am Firmenlauf teil, genossen die Fête de la Musique in der Saarbrücker Innenstadt, sangen Karaoke im Irish Pub, spielten Paddle-Tennis am Fluss, besuchten den Campus Alt-Saarbrücken der htw saar und mehrere Partys. In der zweiten Woche sah das ISS-Programm zudem gemeinsam mit dem Internationalen Studierendenprogramm der htw saar einen Tagesausflug nach Strasbourg in Frankreich vor, einer Stadt mit reicher deutsch-französischer Kultur, Geschichte und Ästhetik.

Am Freitag, dem 4. Juli, fand die Abschiedszeremonie der ESG statt. Im Rahmen dieser Zeremonie wurden den Teilnehmenden Zertifikate über 5 ECTS für den erfolgreichen Abschluss des der ISS 2025 überreicht. Die Studierenden gaben zum Abschluss sehr positives Feedback, sie empfanden die Internationale Sommerschule als sehr bereichernd und einige von ihnen hoffen, im Rahmen ihres Studiums oder für ein Praktikum oder einen Job in die Region zurückzukommen. Das Programm trug maßgeblich zu einem multikulturellen Austausch zwischen Studierenden unterschiedlicher Herkunft bei, ermöglichte es ihnen, neue Perspektiven zu gewinnen, und ließ sie die wichtigsten Aspekte des Lebens, Studiums und Arbeitens in Deutschland aus erster Hand kennenlernen.

Die International Summer School wird von der Stabstelle für Interkulturelles Management und Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Dr. Julia Frisch) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem International Office organisiert. Sie hat sich seit 2022 zu einer jährlichen Veranstaltung für Studierende der Partneruniversitäten sowie Interessierte aus aller Welt entwickelt. Sie wird auch über das Portal des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) beworben und ist zudem Teil des QUAZAR-Projekts zur Gewinnung und Sicherung internationaler Fachkräfte für das Saarland. Mit der Hilfe vieler engagierter Kolleginnen und Kollegen hoffen wir, auch im nächsten Jahr wieder wunderbare Gäste an der htw saar begrüßen zu dürfen!

A hot summer in the region: the ISS 2025!

From June 16 to July 4, 2025, 13 students from around the world participated in the International Summer School (ISS) on the topic of “How to Start Your Career in Germany.” Most of the participants came from htw saar partner universities, including the Universidad Autónoma Yucatán (UADY), the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, and Southern Oregon University in the USA; other students came as freemovers from Finland and Egypt. Their goal was to learn about the academic, professional, economic, social, and cultural opportunities offered by the htw saar, the Saarland, and Germany in general.

They immersed themselves in the German language almost daily through courses taught by Tina Flauder, which were divided into a beginner group and an advanced group. These courses offered dynamic, interactive activities that enabled the students to learn the language. As will be seen later, the students had the opportunity to apply what they had learned during their stay in everyday life and to practice using the language in real-life situations during joint excursions.

The second category of courses included seminars on life, business, companies, and society in Germany, as well as aspects of teamwork, entrepreneurship, marketing, project management, job applications, starting a business, and job hunting in Germany. In addition, weekly visits to one of the region’s top companies were on the agenda. In the first week, the group visited the Saarstahl rolling mill in Saarbrücken-Burbach.

There, they observed the entire steel wire manufacturing process, from material procurement to transport to customers. Participants had to wear safety suits, helmets, and goggles, which were provided by the company. In the second week, the group visited the ceramics company Villeroy & Boch. There, they observed the manufacture of bathroom fixtures such as sinks and toilets. In the company’s own museum, they also learned more about its history, and rumor has it that the outlet center was also a popular destination. In the last week, the students visited Hager in Blieskastel-Mimbach, where they were shown how fuse boxes are manufactured and learned more about Hager’s product range for electrical installations and smart management in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Last but not least, the students enjoyed entertaining events organized by the International Office, such as visits to pubs, city tours, and music festivals, led by Linus Wrona. This gave them the opportunity to visit iconic locations in Saarbrücken, such as the castle, St. Johanner Markt, and Ludwigskirche. Of course, the Völklinger Hütte World Cultural Heritage Site was also a must-see.

Participants also took part in the company run, enjoyed the Fête de la Musique in downtown Saarbrücken, sang karaoke at the Irish Pub, played paddle tennis by the river, visited the htw saar Alt-Saarbrücken campus, and attended several parties. In the second week, the ISS program also included a day trip to Strasbourg, France, a city rich in German-French culture, history, and aesthetics, in collaboration with the International Student Program at the htw saar.

On Friday, July 4, the ESG farewell ceremony took place. During this ceremony, participants were awarded certificates for 5 ECTS credits for successfully completing the ISS 2025. The students gave very positive feedback at the end, saying that they found the International Summer School very enriching and that some of them hope to return to the region as part of their studies or for an internship or job. The program contributed significantly to a multicultural exchange between students of different backgrounds, enabling them to gain new perspectives and learn firsthand about the most important aspects of living, studying, and working in Germany.

Organized by the Office for Intercultural Management and German as a Foreign Language in collaboration with the International Office, the International Summer School is becoming an annual event for students from partner universities, as well as interested individuals from around the world. It is also promoted through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) portal. With the help of so many dedicated colleagues, we hope to welcome wonderful guests to the htw saar next year.

The International Summer School is organized by the Office for Intercultural Management and German as a Foreign Language (Dr. Julia Frisch) in cooperation with the International Office. Since 2022, it has developed into an annual event for students from partner universities and interested parties from all over the world. It is also advertised on the portal of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and is part of the QUAZAR project to attract and retain international skilled workers for the Saarland. With the help of many dedicated colleagues, we hope to welcome wonderful guests to the htw saar again next year!
